Species of timber for wooden floors

Choosing the species of timber for your new wooden floor is one of the toughest choices to make. They all look great, so it comes down to performance characteristics and visual appeal.

American Black Walnut

Walnut is a tough, hard timber of medium density and low stiffness. The sap wood is creamy white, heartwood is light brown to dark chocolate brown, occasionally with a purplish cast and darker streaks.

American Hard Maple

American Hard Maple is strong, heavy, hard, and straight grained with a fine texture. The colour is cream with fine red/brown bands. The sapwood is creamy white with a slightly reddish brown tinge and the heartwood varies from light to dark reddish brown.

American Red Oak

American red oak is the dominant species in the U.S. hardwood forests – with distinctive grain, and wood that is not always red in colour. The name comes from the leaf colour in the fall.

American Roasted White Ash

Ash wood is generally straight-grained with a coarse uniform texture. Its appearance has a very strong grain contrast between the softer summer growth and hard winter growth rings. No two pieces are ever the same in appearance.

American Roasted White Oak

American White Oak resembles European Oak, being a mixture of species. However, it is more variable in colour, pale yellowish-brown to mid-brown, sometimes with a pinkish tint.

American White Ash

The sapwood is light coloured to nearly white and the heartwood varies from greyish brown to light brown, to pale yellow streaked with brown. The wood is generally straight grained with a coarse uniform texture.

American White Oak

American White Oak is similar in colour and appearance to European oak. The sapwood is light coloured and the heartwood is light to dark brown. American White Oak is mostly straight grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays and red oak.

AUS Blackwood (Tasmanian)

The highly decorative hardwood of blackwood outshines almost every other timber in the range of colours it possesses. The heartwood is a rich golden brown through which there may be streaks of reddish brown or almost black.

Australian Oak/Ash

Australian Oak/Ash (Tasmanian Oak/Victorian Ash) is a light colored and medium density hardwood, pale straw through to lighter browns, with excellent staining qualities.

European White Oak

European White Oak (Engineered flooring species) is a hard and heavy wood with medium strength properties.
Machining is well, nailing and screwing properties are good, but pre-boring is necessary. Gluing must be done with care, the wood is dense, slightly acid an rich in tannins.

Jarrah

Jarrah is native to south western Australia, it is a heartwood with a rich dark brownish red colour. It can have straight or interlocked grain with an even medium coarse texture. Considered to be one of the world's most durable timbers.

Kwila (Merbau)

Kwila is a high quality, strong and durable hardwood. The heartwood is yellowish-brown, brown or dark red, red-brown, turning to a dark red-brown with age. The wood is hard and heavy, the texture moderately coarse but even, and the grain may be straight or interlocked but is often wavy.

Pilularis Blackbutt

Blackbutt is a large tree, attaining 40 to 60 m in height and 1 to 2 m in stem diameter. It has a straight slender trunk, circular in cross-section. The bark on the lower part of the trunk is dark grey-brown in colour, fibrous and fissured. (Engineered and Solid hardwood flooring available)

Rosewood

A vibrant timber with large variations in colour, honey yellows, fiery reds and mellow browns. Prized for use in musical instruments such as guitars.

Spotted Gum

Spotted Gum is strong, durable and is a popular Australian hardwood. It is often used in exterior projects as well as used in a variety of structural and internal applications. (Engineered and solid hardwood flooring is available)

Taun or Akwa

Akwa is native to south-west Pacific region and is major commercial timber species of solomon islands. The colour of Akwa ranges from pale pinkish-brown to reddish-brown. Some trees produce a fiddleback type figure. It is very attractive and appealing timber.
